Welcome to the island

We first came here for a long weekend that turned into ten days, and we have come back every September since, when the crowds have gone and the sea is warmest. It is not a beach holiday so much as a slow one: stone villages, a swim before lunch, dinner that starts at nine. We wanted to get married somewhere we already loved, with the people we love most, and give everyone a reason to stay a few days longer than a wedding needs.

How We Met

Henry was late to a friend's birthday dinner in London and took the only empty seat, which was next to Claire, who had been given the wrong date and had been waiting at the table for forty minutes. She had already ordered. He apologised for the whole restaurant.

Six years later he asked her to marry him on the terrace of a rented house above Deià, badly, halfway through breakfast, because he could not wait until the walk he had planned. She said yes before he finished the sentence. We kept the house for this weekend.

Flights
Fly into Palma (PMI). There are direct flights from most European cities — London is about two hours and twenty minutes. Book early; late September fills up.
Transfers
Deià is thirty-five minutes from the airport through the Sóller tunnel. On Saturday a shuttle leaves Plaça d'Espanya in Palma at 16:00 and returns at 01:00.
Car hire
A small car is the easiest way to see the island. The road into Deià is narrow and slow — leave more time than the map suggests, and never trust the parking.

Local Favorites

If you have a spare afternoon. None of this needs booking, all of it needs sunscreen.

    01

    Swim

    Cala Deià

Go before eleven or after five. Pebbles, not sand — the water makes up for it.

    Cala Deià
    02

    Sunset

    Sa Foradada

Forty minutes down, an hour back up. Paella cooked over wood at the bottom; the rock with the hole in it is the reason.

    Sa Foradada
    03

    Walk

    Valldemossa

Ten minutes up the coast. Coca de patata from the bakery on the square, eaten on the steps of the monastery.

    Valldemossa
    04

    Market

    Mercat de l'Olivar

Palma's covered market. Oysters and a glass of cava at the counter before noon counts as breakfast here.
